Chris' Blog

Chris Wheeler from our St Andrew's congregation has recently been doing church-related community work with some of the more deprived young people in the London area.  Many of us remember Chris for his musical talents, especially on his guitar.

Here, in his own words, is Chris' account of his time in London.

Hello there!                                                                          profilepic.jpg

Thanks for taking the time to read this blog and I hope that it will interest you and give you an insight in to my world as a church based youth worker here in London. From here on in I’ll be posting regular blogs all about what’s going on down here in London and all the fun and mishaps I get up to.  But first let me give you a bit of background information to why and how I ever got here in the first place.

How did I ever manage to end up in London?

It all started in the winter of 2006. I was in my second year of sixth form and due to finish in the summer and had no plans of what to do after sixth form.  University wasn’t really on the cards as I wasn’t that interested by it nor did I see myself as clever enough. So from there on in I was stumped as I’d always imagined I’d go to university get a job and live happily ever after. I was looking at all sorts of options but one stuck out was suggested to me by Ian the leader of the local YFC team that I volunteered with in my spare time at the time. He suggested to me to go and join a YFC team for year as a youth worker. So after much prayer I perused this route and boiled it down to two teams one called “180” based in Nuneaton near Birmingham and the other called “Oxygen” in South West London. So I prayed some more and went to Kingston upon Thames, London for a visit to “Oxygen” and that’s where I felt the calling to go, and as they say the rest is history. So come September 1st I moved to London to live on £50 a week with a roof over my head and 3 meals a day in exchange for being a full time youth worker.
